People vs. BigTech’s new Executive Director: Ava Lee
We're very excited to welcome Ava to People vs BigTech as our new Executive Director. She brings a wealth of experience from her time at Global Witness (a longtime PvBT member) and has a strong background in campaigning, communications, and leadership.
Over the past five years, Ava has built and led a team of investigators, researchers, advocates and comms specialists tackling the harms caused by Big Tech.
This has included exposing how Meta’s job advertising algorithm discriminates along gender lines, breaching equalities legislation, and a series of investigations that have demonstrated how companies including Meta, TikTok, X and YouTube are unprepared to deal with incitement to genocide and violence (in Myanmar and Ethiopia), and are equally unprepared to deal with serious electoral misinformation ahead of significant elections (including in the US, Brazil, Kenya, UK, South Africa, Ireland and India).
Most recently her team exposed how TikTok's algorithm repeatedly pushes users to the hard right ahead of elections in Poland, Romania and Germany. For the last year, she also headed up a climate disinformation unit - with work including exposing a bot network supporting Azerbaijan’s COP presidency. Her work has been featured across all of the major wires and top-tier publications, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the BBC, AP, PA and AFP, and has led to a number of legal complaints.
Ava also brings a deep history of campaigning on tax justice and gender equality, adding to the strategic depth she'll bring to PvBT.
We're thrilled to have her on board!
